Operation Opera – the destruction of the Iraqi nuclear Reactor

On Sunday, June 7, 1981, IAF aircraft attacked the Iraqi nuclear reactor "Osirak," 17 Kilometers southeast of Bagdad. The reactor was completely destroyed, with no loses to our aircraft.

This is the special announcement issued by Israel's government as it appears in the IAF report: "Operation Opera, Ammunition Hill, the attack on the nuclear reactor in Iraq, June 7, 1981," parts of which are presented here for the first time, courtesy of the "History and Heritage division at the IAF."

Among the declassified materials are: notes written prior to the attack, photographs of the attacking teams, a letter written by the then IAF commander, General (res.) David Ivri, to the commanders of the attacking squadrons, a citation for bravery received by colonel Zeev Raz, commander of one of the attacking squadrons
