Following the War of Independence Israel was confronted by Palestinian refugees infiltrating its borders and by terrorist acts sponsored and encouraged by Arab states (such as Egypt and Jordan). Among the major tools in fighting the terrorist acts were the reprisal operations, beginning in 1950 and peaking in 1953 – 1956. IDF forces raided targets over the borders, hitting military and police targets, and returned to their bases. These operations were meant to pass a message to the countries sponsoring the terrorist acts, that Israel is determined to defend its sovereignty and citizens, and will not accept assisting acts of infiltration and killing in its territory. Since August 1953 most operations were conducted by Unit 101.
