The Dead Sea is coming to life

Honoring the Seven Natural Wonders of the World competition.

Something good is happening lately in the Dead Sea. From a sleepy place, associated with elderly people or patients arriving for medical treatment to cure their illnesses, it became a tourist attraction undergoing a facelift, with its own sex appeal (see Spencer Tonic's amazing photographs of the People of Israel floating on their backs in Adam and Eve garb). This is partly due to entering the place in the international "Seven Natural Wonders of the World" competition, where it lately entered the final 28 runners-up, alongside the Galapagos Islands, the Amazonas River, the Grand Canyon in the USA, etc. Secret treasures are hidden in the huge collections of The IDF and Defense Establishment Archive, the largest archive in Israel, just like in the depths of the Dead Sea. Therefore, in order to glorify our salty unique lake, we are presenting some of The IDF and Defense Establishment Archive's treasures.

And there are quite a few, from the early 20th century, to the establishment of the state, documents and photographs, map and films about the link between security and industry in establishing the potash facilities, military operations such as Operation Assuta, the struggles of residents of the Dead Sea area during and after the war of Independence, etc.

The exhibition presents a representative selection of Dead Sea related documents and photographs from the early 20th century to the 1950's, shown to the public for the first time.

You are welcome to enjoy the show!!!

Other documents, photographs, films and maps associated with the Dead Sea and other subjects may be found at The IDF and Defense Establishment Archive.
