The First Lebanon War broke on June 6, 1982, following a long period in which residents of northern Israel were constantly shelled by terrorist organizations in Lebanon.
Following the attempt on the life of Israel's ambassador in Britain, Shlomo Argov, on June 3, 1982, Israel's government decided to remove the terrorists from Lebanon and the threat to the residents of the north.
During the war it was decided to broaden its scope by occupying the Beirut area and further north to the Beirut-Damascus highway.
The war also involved hard fought battles with forces of the Syrian Army.
The IDF and Defense Establishment Archive presents for the first time documents from the war.
