November 29, 1947 – the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine

33 states voted for the decision, 13 against, 10 states abstained, and 1 state was absent.

On November 29, 1947, the United Nation General Assembly voted on the Partition Plan for Palestine. The resolution recommended the creation of independent Arab and Jewish States and a Special International Regime for the city of Jerusalem.

After a tense night of listening on the radio to the voting process, the Jewish population of Palestine greeted the recognition of the world nations in a Jewish state with a song and dance.

The Arabs, on the other hand, rejected the resolution and exacerbated their violence against the Jewish population, thus launching the War of Independence leading to Israel's Declaration of Independence.
