The National Unity Government

The seeming "procrastination" of Eshkol's government, created public and political pressures to broaden the ruling coalition.

On May 28, 1967, a hesitant radio speech of Levi Eshkol, contributed to the general feeling that the government needs reinforcement. The pressure resulted in The Herut-Liberal Party Bloc and the Rafi Party joining the government, Menachem Begin and Moshe Dayan became Government Ministers.

On May 25, before joining the government, Dayan asked the Prime Minister to be drafted to the IDF.

Dayan visited various IDF formations, inspecting plans and preparations, and following his entry to the Government, Eshkol was forced to appoint him Minister of Defense.

Dayan's appointment worked wonders on public moral, relieving to a large measure the somber atmosphere in the country.
