1972 – 1980

Intimidation terrorist acts by Palestinian terror organizations

On May 8, 1972, a "Black September" terror squad hijacked a Sabena aircraft on its way from Brussels to Israel. The aircraft and travelers were freed by the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit - "Sayeret Matkal." The incident was the first among a series of bloody terrorist acts perpetrated by Palestinian terror organizations against Israel, with the aim of provoking public opinion worldwide. Among the more notorious terrorist acts perpetrated in that period, were the Lod Airport Massacre (May 30, 1972); the attack against the Israeli team to the Munich Olympic Games (September 5, 1972); the Maalot Massacre (May 15, 1974); the Savoy Hotel incident (March 5, 1975); the hijacking of the Air France airplane to Uganda (July 3, 1976), followed by the successful hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the IDF in Entebbe Airport in Uganda on 4 July 1976; and the Blood-Bathed Bus incident (March 11, 1978), following which Israel launched the Litani Operation in Lebanon.
