"The First Gulf War"
On August 1990, the Iraqi Army invaded Kuwait, annexing it to Iraq. The UN Security Council denounced Iraq, demanding the withdrawal of its troops to the International border. Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq refused, and in response a coalition was established, under the auspices of the UN, of anti-Iraqi states, headed by the USA. The coalition served Iraq an ultimatum, demanding the evacuation of Kuwait, which expired on January 17, 1991. On the same day, in tandem with the coalition offensive against Iraq, Saddam began launching ground to ground missiles at Israel.
During the warfare period (January 17 – February 28, 1991) 39 Scud missiles were launched at Israel, killing one person. Israel's government reacted positively to the USA president's request, not to involve the IDF in the warfare, and did not retaliate.
